How To Use Them

• Work on a dry, brushed-out coat. Thinning scissors drag and chew through damp or tangled hair
• Cut with the blades pointing along the hair, not straight across it. Cutting across leaves a visible shelf
• Two or three passes at different depths blend better than one heavy pass in the same place
• Comb out between passes so you can see what you have actually taken off
• Wipe the blades and put a drop of oil on the pivot after each session, then close and store them shut

Good To Know

• Sharp scissors and a moving dog are a poor combination. Have someone hold the dog, keep your free hand between the blades and the skin, and stop the moment the dog stops settling
• Thinning scissors will not remove a mat. They cut into it and leave a hole. Deal with mats first, using a mat breaker or a slicker
• Not for the face, eyes or feet unless you have been shown how. Those are the areas groomers get called about
• Double-sided thinners are the more forgiving of the two types, which makes them the sensible ones to learn on
