BackBack

The Flamingo Silica Clumping Cat Litter, Fine Grains is a 5 litre bag of lightweight silica gel litter with fine grains of 0.5 to 2 mm, unusual in that it clumps — most crystal litters do not.

Key Features

  • Silica gel rather than clay, so it is a fraction of the weight of a bentonite bag of the same volume and far easier to carry and store
  • It clumps, which most silica litters do not. Urine binds into a lump you can scoop out instead of soaking through the whole tray
  • Fine grains of 0.5 to 2 mm, gentle underfoot — coarse crystal litter is what many cats object to
  • Unscented and low in dust
  • Flamingo states it is also suitable for kittens
  • Made by Flamingo Pet Products, a Belgian pet supplier based in Olen with more than 45 years in the trade

Getting The Best From It

  • Fill to around 5 cm. Silica is light, so a shallow bed shifts about more than clay does
  • Scoop the clumps out daily and top up what you remove. Clumping litter works best when you take the waste out rather than change the whole tray
  • Silica keeps absorbing until it is saturated. Once the grains look uniformly clouded and the tray starts to smell, change it
  • Change litter gradually. Mix the new one in with the old over a week or so, because cats can refuse a tray that suddenly feels or smells different
  • Do not flush it
  • Store the bag sealed. Silica will pull moisture out of humid air and start working before it reaches the tray

Good To Know

  • 5 litres of silica is roughly 2 kg, so it is not directly comparable on price with a 12 kg clay bag. Compare by how long a bag lasts, not by weight
  • Silica gel is not the same as silica gel sachets with a toxic indicator dye, and it is broadly considered non-toxic if a little is swallowed. Even so, it is not food, and a cat or dog that eats litter should see a vet
  • The crunch underfoot puts some cats off. Fine grains like these are the best chance of acceptance, but not every cat takes to crystals
  • Not biodegradable and not flushable
  • One of the two bag designs shown on this listing is the extra-fine version of this litter rather than this one. The product supplied is the fine 0.5-2 mm regular grade
