How To Clean An Ear Safely

• Never push anything down the canal. A dog's ear canal bends, and a cotton bud pushes wax further in and can reach the eardrum.
• Work on the visible part of the ear and the opening only.
• Let the dog shake its head afterwards -- that is what brings the loosened wax up.
• Wipe the outer ear dry, and stop if the dog is in pain at any point.
• Healthy ears mostly look after themselves. Over-cleaning irritates the canal and causes the problem you were trying to avoid.

When Ears Need A Vet, Not A Cleaner

A cleaner is for maintenance on a healthy ear. Go to a vet instead if you see any of this: a strong or yeasty smell, dark or yellow-green discharge, redness or swelling down the canal, pain when you touch the ear, constant head shaking or scratching, or a head held at a tilt. Those are signs of infection or of something lodged in there, and flushing liquid into an ear with a ruptured eardrum can cause lasting damage.

Who Makes It

Groom Professional launched in 2009 on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland and is sold through the grooming trade supplier Christies Direct. The range was built for working salons rather than for the bathroom cupboard, which is why so much of it comes as a concentrate and in four-litre sizes. Groom Professional say the products are manufactured in the UK.

Good To Know

• Use a separate wipe for each ear. If one ear has a problem, the last thing you want is to carry it to the other.
• Never push a wipe down into the canal, even wrapped round a finger.
• These clean; they do not treat. An ear that smells, discharges or hurts needs a vet.
• Keep it out of the eyes, and out of your pet's mouth. Rinse with clean water if any gets in.
• Keep it out of reach of children and store it somewhere cool and dry.
