Hobby Absorbex Micro Aquarium Filter Media - 700g is a highly porous biological filter medium. Hobby put the internal surface area at roughly 765 square metres in the 700g pack - that is the number that matters in a biological medium, because surface area is where your nitrifying bacteria live.

- About 765 Square Metres of colonisable surface per 700g pack, per Hobby.
- Biological Stage Media: this is where ammonia becomes nitrite and nitrite becomes nitrate. It is the part of a filter that actually keeps fish alive.
- Hobby Also Cite Nitrate And Phosphate Reduction through anaerobic activity in the deeper pores. Plausible in a mature, slow-flow filter; do not count on it as a nitrate solution.

How To Get The Benefit
- Put the wool before it, not after. Mechanical media first, biological media second. Biological media clogged with dirt is just gravel.
- Never rinse it under the tap. Chlorinated water kills the bacteria you spent weeks growing. Rinse it in tank water you have just siphoned out, and only when flow drops.
- Replace it in halves. If you must change it, swap half and leave the rest for a month. Replacing all the biological media at once restarts the cycle.
- It takes weeks to work. New media is sterile. In a new tank, cycle properly; in an established one, it will seed itself from the existing filter.
Good To Know
- This listing is the 700g pack.
- Use it in a mesh bag if your filter has open baskets.
- No filter medium removes nitrate reliably. Water changes and plants do that.
- Warm water holds less oxygen and bacteria need oxygen - so in UAE summers keep flow and aeration up, or your biofilter slows down exactly when the fish need it most.
