Good To Know

• Buy the crate by the dog, not by the puppy. It should stand up without ducking, turn round without touching the sides and lie out flat. A crate a dog cannot stand up in is the wrong crate, whatever else it has going for it.
• A crate is a bed, not a punishment. Feed in it, leave the door open for the first week and never shut a dog in one to deal with bad behaviour - that is how a dog learns to fight the door.
• Wire is cooler than plastic, which matters here. Keep any crate out of direct sun and out of a parked car, where the inside goes past survivable within minutes.
• A cover over three sides turns a wire crate into a den and settles most dogs faster than anything else you can do to it. Leave the front open so the dog can see out.
