Description

Schesir Tuna in Jelly Complete Wet Cat Food is a complete wet food for adult cats, which Schesir puts at 55% tuna in a soft jelly.

Key Features

  • Declared a complete food by Schesir: In those words, which almost nothing else in this older range says.
  • 55% tuna, published: A high figure, and the composition is published in full rather than summarised.
  • A feeding guide for use as the whole diet: A completeness claim without a feeding guide is worth very little. This one has both, and the figures are in the section below.
  • Two sizes on this page: 85 g and 140 g.
  • Contains 1.5% rice: So not grain-free, and worth knowing if that is what you are after.
  • Set in a soft jelly: The texture this range is known for, and the thing a fussy cat either loves or picks around.
  • 100% natural ingredients: The brand's claim, at a quality it says is equivalent to human food.
  • No colourings, additives or chemical preservatives: Stated by Schesir for the whole of this range.
  • Steam-cooked and hand-processed: Which is why the fillets in the tin still look like fillets.
  • Fish the brand says is caught in the open sea: Schesir's sustainability claim for its fish, stated across the range.

Schesir Declares This One A Complete Food

  • Its own description opens with the words complete wet food for adult cats, and it is one of very few in this older range that says so.
  • It also publishes a feeding guide for feeding it as the whole diet, which is the thing that makes a completeness claim mean something: two 140 g cans a day for a 4 kg cat, two and a half for a 6 kg cat, three for an 8 kg cat.
  • Treat those as a starting point. Adjust on what you can feel over the ribs, and tell us your cat's weight if you want help working it out.

The Published Composition, And One Figure That Cannot Be Right

  • Schesir publishes this one in full: tuna 55%, rice 1.5%, refined sunflower oil 2%, and minerals. That is a short ingredient list and the tuna figure is a good one.
  • The analysis is published as protein 14%, crude fibre 0.1%, crude ash 1.1% and moisture 84%.
  • The fat figure is printed as 0.2% and we do not believe it. The same panel lists 2% added sunflower oil, and a food with 2% added oil in it cannot analyse at 0.2% fat. A decimal point has almost certainly moved and the real figure is 2.0%.
  • We are telling you rather than quietly repeating it, because fat is not a detail in a cat's diet. We have asked for the corrected panel and will send it over when we have it.
  • The rice at 1.5% is worth noting too: this is not a grain-free food.

What Schesir Claims For This Range, As Their Claim

  • 100% natural ingredients, of a quality the brand says is equivalent to those used for human food. That is a claim about sourcing standards, not an invitation to eat it yourself.
  • No added colourings, no appetising additives, no chemical preservatives. Fish the brand says is sustainably caught in the open sea.
  • The best parts of the meat or fish, steam-cooked and hand-processed. That last part is the brand's explanation for why the fillets look like fillets rather than like paste, and on this range you can see it in the tin.

Wet Food And Water, Which Counts For More Here

  • A cat is bad at drinking. It evolved to get most of its water from what it caught, and a cat on dry food alone often runs slightly dry for years without anyone noticing.
  • In this climate that is worth real money in avoided urinary trouble. Wet food is water going in without the cat having to choose to drink it.
  • It also means you are buying water by weight, which is the honest reason a tin looks dear per kilogram next to a bag of kibble.

Good To Know

  • A note on the jelly: cats that like it really like it, and cats that do not will lick the fillets clean and leave the rest. Neither is a fault in the food. If yours is the second kind, ask us about the broth and mousse ranges instead.
  • Serve at room temperature, cover an opened tin and refrigerate it, and use it within a day or two. Cats refuse cold food and you will think they have gone off it. Do not leave wet food down for hours in a warm room - this matters far more here than in Italy, where it was formulated.
  • High in protein and low in carbohydrate is the brand's summary of this recipe, and on the published figures that is fair: 14% protein against 1.5% rice.
  • This is one of the few in this older range that publishes its composition, and we have it. Ask and we will send the panel over so you can compare it properly against anything else you are weighing up.
