Schesir Maintenance Chicken Medium Adult Dry Dog Food - 3KG

Schesir Maintenance Chicken Medium Adult Dry Dog Food is a complete and balanced everyday dry food made with chicken, which Schesir describes as suiting medium and large breed dogs.

Key Features

• A single source of animal protein: The brand's claim for this recipe.
• Selenium and vitamin E as named antioxidants: Named specifically on this one rather than left as a plant blend, alongside omega 3 and omega 6.
• Two sizes on this page: 3 kg and 12 kg.
• No added colourings or preservatives: The brand's claim across its dry food.
• Cruelty-free production: The brand's claim, stated as no invasive animal testing.

One Named Animal Protein

• Schesir states a single animal protein source for this recipe, and that is the reason to pick it over an everyday food that blends several.
• It matters if you are working out what your dog reacts to, because you cannot run that test on a food with four meats in it.
• The claim is about the animal protein specifically. A dry food can still carry plant proteins such as corn gluten alongside it, so for a strict elimination diet ask us for the full panel and talk to your vet about how to run it.

A Complete Food, Unlike Schesir's Complements Line

• Complete and balanced, so this can be the whole diet.
• Worth saying because Schesir also sells a Complements line, which is a complementary food by its own label and carries a two-servings-a-day ceiling. The names are similar and the consequence is not.

A Dry Food Carries Almost No Water

• That is the convenience and it is also the catch. A dog living on dry food alone has to drink the difference, and in this climate that is not a small difference.
• Keep water available and topped up, and consider a wet meal mixed through. Schesir's own feeding advice suggests alternating its dry and wet food, and says plainly that this is advisable rather than necessary.
• Reseal the bag and keep it out of the kitchen heat. The fat in a dry food goes off, and an opened bag here goes stale faster than the date suggests.

Good To Know

• Mix a new dry food into the old one over a week or so rather than swapping the bowl in one go. A sudden switch loosens most dogs, and you will blame the food rather than the speed of the change.
• A note on who it is for: the product is named for medium dogs and Schesir's own description says medium or large breed. If you have a large or giant breed, tell us the dog's weight and age and we will say whether this is the right bag, because a big dog's joints and growth rate are a different problem from a spaniel's.
• 12 kg is a lot of food to keep fresh in this climate. Unless you are feeding a big dog or several, the 3 kg is usually the better buy even at a worse price per kilogram.
• Ask us for the composition and the analysis and we will photograph them. Most of the Schesir dry dog foods do not publish theirs, and the front of a bag is not enough to compare two foods on.
