The Fida Slip Lead Training Leash is a slip lead — a single length of rope with a loop at one end that goes straight over the dog's head, so no collar or harness is needed to walk out of the door.

Key Features

• 6 ft (180 cm) long in 13 mm (1/2 inch) braided nylon rope, thick enough to hold comfortably without cutting into the hand
• Reflective threads woven through the rope rather than added on top, so they do not wear off
• A sliding leather stopper sets how far the loop can close, and holds its position once set
• Leather cuffs at the handle and at the ring, which is where a rope lead normally frays first

How To Fit It

• Slide the leather stopper far enough along to open the loop wide enough to pass over the dog's head
• Put the loop over the head, then slide the stopper down so the lead sits high on the neck, just behind the ears and under the jaw
• Set the stopper so the loop cannot close tighter than a comfortable collar. That is what the stopper is for
• Check the position every few minutes on a walk — a slip lead that has slid down onto the windpipe is the wrong position

Good To Know

• A slip lead tightens when a dog pulls. Used correctly, high on the neck with the stopper set, it is a handling tool; used loosely with no stopper, it is a choke
• Not suitable for dogs with a collapsing trachea, and a poor choice for flat-faced breeds such as pugs and French bulldogs, whose airways are already compromised. Use a harness
• Never leave a slip lead on an unattended dog, and never tie a dog up with one. There is nothing to stop it closing
• It is a walking and handling lead, not a correction device. If your dog pulls hard enough to choke itself, the answer is loose-lead training, not a tighter loop
• Rope leads pick up a lot of sand. Rinse and dry it after beach walks or the grit works into the braid
