Description
Hobby Carbon Aktiv Activated Carbon Filter Media is activated carbon, and it does one job extremely well: it strips dissolved organics, odours, chlorine and leftover medication out of the water. It is a tool for a specific moment, not a permanent part of a filter.
Key Features
- Removes Medication Residue: the main reason to own it. After a course of treatment, carbon pulls the remains out instead of leaving them to break down slowly.
- Clears Odour And Yellowing: the faint tea colour an older tank develops is dissolved organics, and carbon takes them out.
- Removes Chlorine, useful if you are topping up from the tap.
- Three Sizes: 300g, 500g and 1kg.
The One Rule That Matters
- Take the carbon out before you medicate. Hobby say this and they are right. Carbon removes the medication as fast as you add it, so you dose, nothing happens, and you conclude the medicine does not work. Remove the carbon, treat, then put fresh carbon in afterwards to clear the residue.
- Do not run it permanently either. Carbon exhausts in about four to six weeks and then it is just an expensive sponge. It also strips the tannins from any botanicals or humic conditioner you are running, so the two cancel out.
- Rinse it before use. New carbon carries dust that will cloud a tank.
Good To Know
- Pick the weight above.
- Use it in a mesh bag - loose granules get everywhere and into impellers.
- Carbon does not remove ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. If one of those is your problem, this is the wrong product.
- Exhausted carbon does not release what it absorbed back into the tank, despite the old story. It just stops working.
