Description

Schesir Chicken Fillets with Papaya Wet Dog Food - 10 x 150 g is a wet food for dogs made with chicken fillets and papaya, and the only one in this range that publishes its full analysis.

Key Features

  • 62.2% chicken fillets with 4% papaya: Both figures published, which is more than the rest of this range tells you.
  • The analysis is published too: 10% protein, 0.3% fat, 84% moisture, 53 kcal per 100 g. There is a section below on what that actually means, because it matters.
  • Steam-cooked: The brand's stated method, which it credits with holding on to the nutrients and the texture.
  • No added colourings or preservatives: The brand's claim for this range.

Whether This Is A Complete Food Is Not Stated, So We Will Not Claim It

  • Schesir does not describe this range as complete and balanced anywhere in its own copy, and we are not going to put words in their mouth.
  • That matters, because Schesir does say it elsewhere in those exact terms: on its Taste The World cans and on its Bio range. When a brand states it on one product and not on another, the silence is worth noticing.
  • A complementary food is meant to be fed alongside a complete diet rather than as the whole diet. If this turns out to be one and you feed it as a sole diet, a dog is short of things it needs - so this is not a detail to shrug at.
  • What we will do rather than guess: ask us and we will photograph the feeding panel on the actual pack before you order, and tell you exactly what it says. If you want a wet food that is definitely a complete meal, the Taste The World and Bio ranges say so on the label and we will point you straight at them.

The Published Analysis, And A Figure We Do Not Trust

  • Schesir publishes the figures for this recipe: 62.2% chicken fillets, 4% papaya, 10% protein, 0.3% fat, 84% moisture, and 53 kcal per 100 g.
  • The fat figure of 0.3% is one we are not going to lean on. Schesir's panels in this format have thrown up a clear error elsewhere in its range: one of its cat recipes reports 0.2% fat while listing 2% added sunflower oil in the same panel, and those two cannot both be true. A decimal point moves easily.
  • So we will not use that number to argue anything about this food in either direction. The point that matters is the one in the section above, and it does not depend on the analysis at all: Schesir does not declare this range complete, and that is what to settle before you feed it as a meal.
  • We have asked for a corrected panel and will send it over when it arrives.

Wet Food And Water, Which Counts For More Here

  • A wet food is mostly water. In this climate that is water going into a dog without the dog having to decide to drink it, and that is a real benefit rather than a marketing one.
  • It also means you are buying water by weight, which is the honest reason a tray or a can looks dear per kilogram next to a bag of kibble.

Good To Know

  • Papaya is unusual in a dog food and it is 4% of the recipe. It is there for interest and variety rather than as a nutritional centrepiece.
  • Cover an opened can or tray, refrigerate it, and use it within a day or two. Let it come back to room temperature first, because dogs refuse fridge-cold food and you will think they have gone off it. Do not leave wet food down for hours in a warm room.
  • Schesir's claim about this range is that the ingredients are of the same quality as those used for human food. That is a claim about sourcing standards, not an invitation to eat it yourself.
  • Ask us for the ingredient list and the analysis and we will photograph them. Most of these do not publish theirs, and on this range the panel is the thing worth seeing.
