A Flat Scratcher Is Not A Tall One

Cats scratch horizontally and vertically for different reasons, and most want both. A flat pad covers the stretching and claw-sheath work; if your cat is going up the back of the sofa, it is asking for a tall post as well, and a pad will not stop that on its own.

Good To Know

• Corrugated cardboard sheds flakes. Expect to run a vacuum round it, and put it where that is not annoying.
• Scratching lets a cat pull the worn outer sheath off its claws and stretch its back and shoulders. It is not a substitute for clipping the claws, which still needs doing.
