Teaching A Cat To Wear It

Almost every failed cat harness fails in the first ten minutes. Put it on indoors, leave it loose, feed your cat while it is on, and take it off before the cat starts working at it. Repeat for a few days before a leash ever gets clipped on, and longer before a door is opened. A cat that has learned the harness means nothing bad will walk in it; a cat whose first experience of it was a pavement will not.

Good To Know

• Cats reverse out of harnesses rather than pulling forward out of them. Check that you cannot slide the body strap back over the shoulders, and re-check after the first wash.
• Never leave a harness on a cat you are not watching. A harness can catch on a handle or a branch and, unlike a collar, it has no breakaway.
• In UAE summer, paving and sand hold heat long after the air has cooled. Walk before sunrise or well after dark, press the back of your hand to the ground for five seconds first, and keep to shade and grass.
• Reflective is not luminous. It throws back light that is pointed at it, such as car headlights or a torch, and does nothing in a dark street with no light source. If you want your cat visible on its own you need a light, not reflective webbing.
