A Breakaway Collar Is Not A Walking Collar

The buckle that makes this collar safe also makes it useless for restraint. Clip a leash to it and the first time your cat pulls, the collar opens and the cat is loose. Zee Cat say the same thing: use a harness if you want to walk your cat. Keep a breakaway collar for carrying an ID tag and for being seen.

Good To Know

• Fit it so two fingers slide under the webbing. Any looser and a paw can go through it; any tighter and the breakaway buckle may not release when it needs to.
• A light ID tag is fine. A heavy tag, or a bell and a tag together, can be enough weight to pop the buckle on its own.
• Check the fit monthly on a kitten. The 20 to 30 cm range covers a lot of growing, which is easy to forget until the collar is tight.
• A textile-look webbing shows dirt more than a coated one. This is a collar for an indoor or garden cat rather than one that comes home through a drain.
