The Farmina N&D Prime Chicken & Pomegranate Neutered Dry Cat Food is Farmina's grain-free food for neutered and spayed cats — the same chicken base as the adult recipe, with the fat cut to 11% and the fibre raised to 5.1%, which is the whole point of a neutered formula.

Feeding

• Weigh portions to the table on the bag and adjust to body condition — you should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat
• Neutering lowers a cat's energy requirement by roughly a third while the appetite often stays where it was. Free-feeding is what puts the weight on
• Change over across about seven days, mixing a little more of the new food in each day. A sudden switch usually means loose stools
• Always leave fresh, clean drinking water available

Storage

• Store in a cool, dry place and reseal the bag after each use. Grain-free kibble is high in fat and goes stale once air reaches it

Good To Know

• A lower-fat food only works if the portion is controlled too. Switching food while still leaving the bowl full changes very little
• Some weight gain after neutering is normal, but obesity raises the risk of diabetes, arthritis and urinary disease. If your cat is already overweight, a vet-supervised plan works better than a food swap on its own
• Neutered male cats are the group most prone to urinary blockage, which is an emergency. A cat straining in the tray and producing nothing needs a vet immediately, not overnight
