Description

The Flamingo Loki Hawai Hooded Cat Litter Box is a hooded litter tray measuring 50 cm wide, 37 cm deep and 38 cm high, with a swing door, a carbon filter in the lid and a scoop included.

Key Features

  • Removable lid with a swinging flap door, so the cat can come and go while the litter stays inside
  • Carbon filter set into the lid to take the edge off odour. It is replaceable, and Flamingo sells the door and filter as spares
  • Clip closures around the rim, so the hood lifts straight off for cleaning rather than needing to be wrestled apart
  • Carry handle moulded into the lid
  • A litter scoop is included in the box
  • Moulded polypropylene, made in Europe
  • Made by Flamingo Pet Products, a Belgian pet supplier based in Olen with more than 45 years in the trade

Getting A Cat To Use It

  • Take the door off for the first week or two. A flap is the part cats object to, and many will not push through one straight away
  • Most cats prefer a bed of litter around 5 cm deep. Too shallow and they will not dig; too deep and it tips out of the tray
  • Leave the lid off entirely if the cat hesitates, then add it once the tray is being used reliably
  • The usual guidance is one tray per cat plus one spare, placed apart from each other and away from food
  • Put it somewhere the cat is not cornered. Cats avoid a covered tray far less often when it has a clear line of sight to the exit

Cleaning

  • Scoop the clumps out daily and top up what you remove. Clumping litter works best when you take the waste out rather than change the whole tray
  • Wash the tray out properly every few weeks with hot water and unscented detergent
  • Avoid anything containing phenol or pine oil, which are toxic to cats. Check the label rather than assuming
  • Replace the carbon filter when it stops doing anything, roughly every couple of months

Good To Know

  • A hood keeps odour in for you and in for the cat too. If your cat starts going elsewhere, the hood is the first thing to remove
  • 50 cm is a mid-size tray. A large cat, or a Maine Coon, will be cramped — the rule of thumb is a tray one and a half times the cat's body length
  • Not the right tray for an arthritic or elderly cat, which will struggle with the step and the flap
  • Cat faeces can carry toxoplasma. Anyone pregnant or immunocompromised should leave the tray to someone else, or wear gloves and wash their hands afterwards
  • The listing shows the tray in three colours. Only lime and blue are stocked here
