PURINA PRO PLAN Light / Sterilised is a complete dry food for adult dogs that are neutered, prone to weight gain, or already carrying too much. Fat is cut to 9%, against 16 to 18% in the standard adult recipes, while protein stays high at 27% so the dog loses fat rather than muscle.

Purina's own claim is specific: combined with daily walks, this diet enables body fat loss of up to 60% within 12 weeks. Note the qualifier. The food does part of the job and the walks do the rest.

Usefully, the pack carries three separate feeding tables rather than one, because a neutered dog holding steady, and an overweight dog actively slimming, need different amounts.

Feeding Guide

• When slimming a dog, feed to its target weight, not its current weight, and weigh the dog regularly.
• Count treats and table scraps within the daily allowance. They undo a diet faster than anything else.
• Split the daily ration across two meals.
• Keep fresh drinking water available at all times.
• When switching from another food, transition gradually over about 7 days.

Storage

• Reseal the bag after each use and store in a cool, dry place.
