Good To Know

• Wet the coat right through before you start and rinse until the water runs clear. Shampoo left in the undercoat is the usual cause of itching a day or two later.
• Keep it out of the eyes and ears. Wash the head last, with your hand rather than a jug, and tip the muzzle down.
• Dry the coat all the way through, especially a thick one. A coat left damp against the skin in this climate is how hot spots start, and a fan does more than a towel.
• Most dogs need bathing far less often than people expect. Washing a healthy coat every week strips the oil out of it; once every four to eight weeks suits most.
• A two-in-one is a compromise by design. For a badly matted coat, a separate shampoo and a separate conditioner left on for a few minutes will do more.
