Keeping Live Mealworms

  • Keep them in a well-ventilated container with the bedding spread evenly
  • Add a slice of raw potato or carrot for moisture, and replace it before it moulds
  • Refrigerating at 7–10 °C puts them into dormancy for up to about 10 weeks
  • Take them out once a week, let them feed at room temperature for 24 hours, then remove uneaten vegetable and refresh the bedding

Good To Know

  • Insects held dormant for weeks lose nutritional value — gut-load for 1–2 days before feeding them on
  • Don't let the bedding get damp; mould spreads through a colony quickly
  • Store in a cool, dry place
