Some greasy patches simply will not shampoo out. Stud tail and black chin build a waxy, sticky layer at the roots that ordinary washing slides straight over. This professional de-greaser goes onto the dry coat first, where a coconut oil emulsifier breaks that grease down so the shampoo that follows can actually reach the skin.

How To Use It

• With the coat dry, part the hair and apply the de-greaser directly to the roots of the greasy area.
• Massage gently so it penetrates and loosens the oil.
• Rinse with warm water at 37 to 39 degrees, pouring slowly over the area while rubbing, until it is completely washed out.
• Then bath the cat with a suitable cat shampoo.

What Causes Stud Tail And Black Chin

Both are overactive sebaceous glands, and both have causes worth dealing with alongside the grooming. Black chin -- feline acne -- is very often linked to plastic food and water bowls; swapping to ceramic or stainless steel and washing them daily fixes a surprising number of cases. Stud tail is commonest in unneutered males but happens in any cat that cannot groom its own tail base, which usually means it is overweight, arthritic or elderly.

Good To Know

• If the skin under the grease is red, swollen, scabby or has pustules, that is infected and needs a vet -- degreasing an infected chin makes it sorer, not better.
• Keep it off broken skin, and keep the session short. A cat that has had enough will tell you.
• This is a cat product and a pre-wash step. It is not a shampoo and not a treatment.
• Avoid the eyes. If any gets in, flush thoroughly with clean water.
