Getting The Best From A Whitening Shampoo

• Wash once with an ordinary shampoo first if the dog is properly dirty. A whitener works on a clean coat, not through mud.
• Leave the lather on the stained areas for a minute or two before rinsing. That contact time is where the work happens.
• Tear stains and saliva stains are iron-based, from porphyrins in tears and saliva. No shampoo fully removes them -- keeping the area clean and dry is what helps.
• Two shorter washes beat one long soak on a badly discoloured coat.

How To Use It

• Wet the coat right through with warm water.
• Work it into a rich lather.
• Leave the lather on the stained areas for a minute or two.
• Rinse until the water runs clear, then towel and dry.
• Cover the ears while you rinse.

• Whitening shampoos work with a violet dye rather than bleach -- the colour on the ingredients list here is CI 60730. Violet cancels yellow, which is why it brightens a white coat. Left on far longer than the instructions say it can leave a faint tint on a very pale or thin coat, so stick to a minute or two.
• Soap-free and paraben-free, like the rest of the range.
• A persistently brown-stained muzzle or paw is often a licking or tear-overflow problem rather than a washing one. Constant paw licking in particular usually means allergy or discomfort and is worth a vet's opinion.
• A shampoo cleans; it does not treat disease. Broken, scabby or weeping skin, bald patches, a smell that returns within days of a bath, or scratching to the point of bleeding all need a vet rather than a different bottle.
• Avoid the eyes. If any gets in, flush thoroughly with clean water.
