Description
The Exo Terra Heat Wave Rock is a naturalistic heated rock that mimics a stone warmed by the sun — a supplementary heat source that also looks like part of the terrarium.
What It Does and Where It Fits
Reptiles are ectotherms and rely on external heat to digest food and stay healthy. Many species naturally take a share of that heat by lying on ground that has been warmed by the sun, so a warm surface to rest on suits how they are built.
Use it as a supplement, not as your only heat source. A reptile also needs warm air and, for most species, an overhead basking lamp. A heat rock alone leaves the animal's back cold while its belly warms, which is not how any reptile evolved to heat itself.
Why the Design Matters
Older heat rocks had a bad reputation, and deservedly so: uneven elements produced concentrated hot spots, and reptiles — which do not always move away from a surface that is burning them — suffered severe belly burns.
This one addresses that directly. The heating element is fully encased and electronically controlled to spread heat evenly with no hot spots, and it shuts off automatically when the surface reaches a set temperature.
Key Features
- Naturalistic appearance that blends into any terrarium
- Fully encased, electronically controlled element — even heat, no hot spots
- Automatic shut-off at a set surface temperature
- Waterproof, non-toxic thermal conductive resin, easy to clean
- Energy efficient
- Suits both humid and dry setups
- Available in 5W, 10W and 15W
Using It Safely
- Pair with an Exo Terra thermostat for precise control.
- Check the surface temperature with a thermometer after setting up, and again periodically. Do not rely on the shut-off alone.
- Leave plenty of cool areas in the enclosure so your reptile can move away from the heat.
- Watch a new animal for the first few days. If it lies on the rock continuously rather than moving on and off, your ambient temperature is probably too low — fix that rather than leaving it to rely on the rock.
- Inspect the cable and casing regularly and stop using it if either is damaged.
