Groomers Choice

Groomers Choice makes the products a salon actually gets through: aromatherapy shampoos and conditioners built for a grooming table, plus the small essentials that live within arm's reach of it. Every formula comes in a 500ml bottle for home use and a 4kg salon container for the businesses washing dogs all day, so you can buy at the volume that suits you without changing product.

Which Shampoo

Five formulas, each aimed at a different problem rather than a different scent:

• Deep Cleansing -- alkyl glycosides and a rich, gentle foam that clears trapped dirt from the follicle while keeping the coat's oil-water balance. For dogs that arrive genuinely dirty.
• Soothing Fountain -- chamomile, witch hazel, horse chestnut and allantoin. The gentlest in the range, for sensitive or itchy skin.
• Silk Supple -- hydrolysed silk and wheat protein with anti-static conditioners, for long, silky and drop-coated breeds that mat easily.
• White Coat -- plant henna powder to lift the yellowing and dullness that settles into white and cream coats around the muzzle, feet and tail.
• Fluffy Styling -- hydrolysed protein, Pro-Vitamin B and natural alkyl lactate that build body and spring, so a coat holds a shape under the scissors.

And one conditioner: Nutriment, with silk and wheat protein and jojoba oil, so the comb glides instead of dragging. On any long or fine coat it is not optional -- shampoo opens the hair cuticle and the conditioner is what closes it again.

The Spa Series Essentials

• Ear Care Drops -- a fast wax-dissolving cleaner for cats and dogs, used while the pet is already in the bath.
• Ear Powder -- silicon dioxide that dries ear hair so it grips instead of tearing, for groomers clearing a hairy canal.
• Cat De-Greaser -- a coconut oil emulsifier applied to the dry coat, for stud tail, black chin and the greasy patches shampoo slides straight over.
• Styptic Powder -- stops a bleeding quick in about ten seconds. For dogs, cats and birds, and the one thing in this list you want before you need it.

Two Sizes, One Formula

This is the practical reason groomers buy the range. Trial the 500ml, and once you know a formula works move to the 4kg -- the cost per wash drops sharply and nothing about the product changes. If you are washing one dog at home, stay on the 500ml; a 4kg container will outlast your interest in it.

Good To Know

• The shampoo and conditioner range is soap-free and paraben-free. It does contain fragrance and colourants, so for a dog that reacts to perfume specifically a fragrance-free wash is a better starting point than the Soothing Fountain.
• The Ear Care Drops are the exception to the paraben-free rule -- that formula contains methyl-, ethyl- and propylparaben, plus alcohol.
• Soothing is not the same as medicated. None of these shampoos treat a skin condition. Persistent itching is nearly always fleas, food, pollen, dust mites or an infection on top of one of those, and all of them need a vet.
• An ear that smells strongly, discharges, hurts or makes a dog shake its head constantly needs a vet rather than a cleaner, and nothing should be flushed into an ear that might have a perforated eardrum.
• Routine ear plucking is no longer standard advice. Pulling hair out leaves open follicles and an inflamed canal, so many vets now suggest plucking only where there is a reason -- trimming around the opening is usually enough on a healthy ear.
• Everything here is for external use, none of it is edible, and all of it should be kept away from eyes and out of reach of children.
