Why Humidity Deserves Measuring

Temperature gets all the attention, but humidity causes just as many problems and is far harder to judge by eye.

Too low and reptiles shed badly — retained skin around toes and tail tips tightens as it dries, cuts off circulation and costs the animal digits. Dehydration follows, and in amphibians it happens fast.

Too high, with poor ventilation, and you get respiratory infection and scale rot. Both are common and both are avoidable.

The species requirements vary enormously — a leopard gecko wants around 30-40%, a crested gecko 60-80%, a dart frog higher still — and none of that is something you can assess by looking at the glass.

Why the Min/Max Memory Matters

Humidity swings hard through the day: it spikes after misting and falls away for hours afterwards. A single glance at the display tells you almost nothing about that cycle. The min/max memory shows you the actual range your animal is living in, which is what you need in order to set a misting schedule sensibly.

Getting Useful Readings

• Place the sensor at animal height, not at the top of the enclosure. Humidity is not uniform — it is higher near damp substrate and lower near a basking lamp.
• Check the min/max after 24 hours to see the real daily swing.
• Keep the sensor out of direct spray, or it will read 100% for hours after each misting.
