The Reason to Buy One

Many lizards will not drink from a standing water bowl. Chameleons in particular do not recognise still water as something to drink; in the wild they take water from droplets running down leaves after rain or dew. Put a full bowl in a chameleon's enclosure and it can dehydrate beside it.

Moving water solves this. The sound and movement register as drinkable, and the animal drinks readily from the falling stream. Dehydration is one of the commonest causes of illness in captive chameleons — it shows up as sunken eyes and, over time, kidney damage — so this is a genuine health measure rather than an ornament.

The circulation also raises humidity continuously, which suits rainforest species far better than a bowl that simply sits there.

A waterfall needs more upkeep than a bowl, and neglected ones become a health hazard rather than a benefit.

• Remove organic waste from the collection tank regularly. Warm, recirculating water with droppings and shed skin in it grows bacteria quickly.
• Dismantle and scrub the unit routinely — do not just top the water up.
• Treat tap water with Aquatize to remove chlorine and heavy metals.
• Biotize supports beneficial bacteria and reduces odour from decaying waste.
• Never let the pump run dry — it will burn out.
