A Hide Is Not Decoration

A proper hiding area is the most commonly underestimated part of a natural terrarium.

Without a safe place to hide and sleep, reptiles and amphibians develop stress that shows up directly in reduced activity and appetite. Keepers who cannot see their animal often conclude it does not need a hide — which is precisely backwards. An animal that knows it has somewhere to retreat becomes more confident and more visible over time, not less.

A hide also does a second job: it provides a cooler, moister pocket within the enclosure, which animals use to escape heat and to help them shed.

Getting the Most From It

• Give your animal two hides — one at the warm end and one at the cool end — so it never has to choose between feeling safe and being the right temperature.
• Pack damp sphagnum moss underneath to turn it into a humid hide for shedding.

• Rinse in warm water and scrub gently. Resin is non-porous, so it cleans easily.
• Avoid detergents and household cleaners — residues are absorbed through amphibian skin.
• Check it is stable and cannot be tipped or dug out from underneath.
