Many reptiles need a spot of higher humidity than their enclosure generally provides — above all when shedding. A snake or gecko that sheds in conditions that are too dry retains patches of old skin, and retained shed around toes and tail tips tightens as it dries, cuts off circulation and costs the animal digits. It is one of the most common avoidable injuries in captive reptiles.

The fix is simple: pack damp sphagnum moss under the hide, and the animal has somewhere humid to sit when it needs it.
