How It Differs From a Misting System

Worth understanding before choosing between them. A misting system sprays water droplets onto surfaces; a fogger vibrates water into a suspended vapour that hangs in the air.

That difference has practical consequences. Fog raises air humidity without soaking the substrate, so you get high humidity without a permanently wet floor — useful, because constantly saturated substrate causes scale rot and skin infections. It is also how animals that drink from suspended droplets encounter water in the wild.

The Desert Use People Miss

Foggers are usually sold for rainforest setups, but they are just as valuable in arid ones.

Deserts are not dry around the clock. Humidity climbs overnight and condenses as dew at dawn, and many desert reptiles and invertebrates drink that dew — it is a significant part of how they stay hydrated. A short burst of fog in the early morning reproduces it, and a desert species that never gets one may be quietly dehydrated in an enclosure that looks perfectly correct.

Using It

• Place in a water dish or reservoir at a minimum depth of 5 cm. Running it dry will destroy the membrane.
• Use dechlorinated or distilled water. Tap water leaves mineral scale on the membrane, which is the usual reason a fogger stops producing properly.
• Run it in short bursts rather than continuously, and check humidity with a hygrometer. Constant fog with no dry period is as harmful as constant dryness.
• Change the water regularly. Warm, standing water grows bacteria, and a fogger will put that straight into the air your animal breathes.
• The membrane is a consumable — a replacement membrane is available separately.
